“At a visit to a local deli, the women working behind the tall counter looked worn. She bore a bitter look on her face and she seemed wholly disinterested in connecting with her customers. The disdain on her face made me a little scared to even place an order with her. When I did, she barely spoke and did not make eye contact. She slapped the cheese on the counter. I briefly wondered about her life experience and what circumstance may explain her negativity.

With hesitance, I placed a You Matter card on the counter where the cheese was. She lifted and peered at it. It’s in that moment and the few that followed that the shared YM experience felt so palpable and worthwhile. Something shifted. A small but real shift.

She smiled, warmed slightly, like she woke up from a trance. I continued on my way through the store and then glanced back. I was touched. She was showing the card to her co-worker. That was the most heart-warming moment for me, seeing her sharing and opening to the warmth inside her. A real gift for us both.”
