You Matter Moment of the Week

“In the last few years as flying has become even more chaotic and challenging, I started flying with small tokens of appreciation for my flight attendants. I think it’s an under appreciated role and especially in a post COVID world where distress tolerance is low and filters are off. It has to be a challenge to be working with the public so directly and enforcing rules.

I slip You Matter cards in a little pouch with a $5 coffee gift card. I’ve had all sorts of reactions from tears as a result of needing to hear that message and having a bad day to absolute shock and gratitude for being recognized.

On my last flight from Kaua’i, the Hawaiian airlines crew of four Hawaii based flight attendants were incredible. We were flying in tropical storm where 70% of outgoing flights were canceled. The flight attendants even lost power at their own homes.

After I gave the pouches and cards to their purser, the crew surprised me with a handwritten note. One of them saying, ‘This was the message I needed!’ I’m sure the gift cards are nice, but it means something deeper to be seen by someone. To be valued and told you matter in this world. Especially, when your job is to keep people safe and some people treat you like you’re there to serve them drinks and pick up after them.

It was a beautiful gift for me to receive this card in exchange for a You Matter card. In a way, they told me I mattered too. Can’t think of a more beautiful message to share.”
