“I have been giving You Matter cards out for four or five years now. I decided I wanted to get this message into the eyes of a lot more people than I had cards for. I wanted to do this at a high school where so many kids seem to be struggling with some big challenges. To do this, I made a 3‘ x 6‘ sign and had it attached to the fence along the school property. This also happens to be the entrance to the community fitness center and a main thoroughfare where well over 10,000 people pass by here every day. I’m sure this is going to get some attention.
This is a message I believe in. Everyone, whether we believe it or not, really does matter and they need to know that.
Whenever I give a card away, I always receive a great big smile and thank you. It isn’t an obligatory response. I can see that it’s genuine, and each person appreciates the fact that I recognize that they matter.
I’m hooked on it. It’s been such a fun experience giving these cards out, and I’m going to keep doing it for years and years. I believe I matter, and I believe that everyone else matters. This has helped me internalize that simple but powerful message.”
