You Matter Moment of the Week
“From the first card I gave out, I was hooked on the merits of this simple but deep connection and the appreciation it elicited.
My first card was given to a cashier in a checkout line at a big box store. She appeared to be in her late 60s. As I waited my turn, I watched and listened to her as she spoke to customers She was extremely kind and helpful. When I approached her, I saw her giving me a smile, but something in her kind manner showed me she was having to exert a particular effort to be pleasant. Something felt off.
I asked if she was feeling all right, and she said yes, but that she’d had some bad news from her family. She shared a bit more information, and I expressed my concern for her and her situation. At that moment, I remembered I now had my You Matter cards in my purse. I pulled one out and gave it to her. With tears in her eyes, she thanked me, and immediately said she planned to share it with someone she knew who would feel the same gratitude that she did when I gave it to her.
That was about 10 years ago, when this simple, straightforward way to connect to people in a most positive way began. I have been addicted to the amazingly powerful response of gratitude I have received each time I give out a card, and plan to continue forever.
The reward of witnessing a recipient’s expression of surprise and warmth when given a card, brings me some way to connect with anyone I see who needs the boost of recognition, of actually being seen, at a time they are in need.”
