You Matter Moment of the Week

“I try to leave a card when I see someone struggling, very busy, or just looking alone. Sometimes I tape them to the bottom of a plate at a restaurant for the dishwasher, or, when I donate a plate of goodies. Sometimes I hand one to a restroom attendant or event coordinator and watch them light up when they read it.

Recently, I was in a busy coffee shop and a young man was helping get orders out to customers. People were getting impatient and he was working hard and fast. I needed a utensil and didn’t want to bother him, but as I looked around to find it for myself, he stopped what he was doing and very sweetly said, “What can I get for you, my dear?” He handed me what I needed and without missing a beat went back to his orders. I grabbed a You Matter card from my table, walked back and handed it to him. He nodded and kept on working.

From my table I saw him stop to look at it about a minute later and with a big smile looked for me to say thank you. It felt great to add one moment of thankfulness to an otherwise busy shift.

Handing out You Matter cards helps me pay attention to moments where someone can use a tiny bit of encouragement, and gives me a sense of contentment to know a little gesture can make a difference. As Mother Theresa said, ‘Not all of us can do great things, only small things with great love.’ Passing on You Matter cards is a small thing I can easily do.”
