Dear YuMMies,

It happened again. Perhaps it’s happened to you. “You have no idea what this means to me.”

That’s what a pet store employee said when I gave her a You Matter card.

And she’s right. I have no idea what receiving the card meant to her.

And no idea what it is to be her.
And no idea what worries keep her up at night, what dreams she fears won’t come true, what doubt she holds or what brought her to this pet store.

But I do know that when she read the words on the card, she felt seen beyond her doubts, worries, and struggles – she felt seen by another human being as a
human being.

And I know that in that moment of shared humanity both of us felt connected, bettered, and nourished.

And that was something…maybe that was everything.
