Loneliness: A Challenge Across Generations

Loneliness is a growing problem affecting people of all ages.

AARP research shows that social isolation and loneliness affect one in four adults aged 65 and older in the United States3.

While it’s often associated with older adults, a surprising number of young people also report feeling lonely. A recent study by Cigna found that Gen Z is the loneliest generation, with 63% reporting feelings of loneliness1. This isn’t a trend limited to the US either. A UK study by the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission revealed that nearly half of young people aged 16-25 have felt lonely at some point in the past month2.

These statistics paint a concerning picture, but there’s hope.

Loneliness can be decreased through fostering social connection, creating community, and simply letting others know they matter.

Building Bridges, Not Walls
All of us feel lonely at some point. So, it’s good to remind ourselves of what we can do to feel better and what we can do to encourage others.

    • Don’t let being busy get in the way of connecting with friends, and family, and new acquaintances.
    • Put down your phone and strike up a conversation with someone at the bus stop or on the train.
    • Consider joining a club, or volunteering in your community. Look for groups that share your interests, be it a book club, a sports team, or an online forum. And if you can’t find a group – start one!
    • If you have the option, go back to the office even for a day or two a week.

Feeling part of a community provides a sense of belonging and reduces feelings of isolation.

You Matter
By creating positive connections and reminding people of their inherent significance, You Matter Marathon is helping to build a world where people feel less lonely and more connected.

Every act of kindness, every conversation that fosters connection, every instance of reminding someone of their worth contributes to this mission.

Take a moment today to reach out to someone let them know that they matter. Thank you for joining us in the fight against loneliness!

You matter.
