At You Matter Marathon, we know the power of a simple message: You Matter. It’s a phrase that validates someone’s existence, affirms their worth, and reminds them they’re not alone. But feeling like you matter goes beyond just words. It’s deeply connected to a fundamental human need: the need to belong.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow famously placed belonging in his Hierarchy of Needs, right after our basic physiological needs for food and safety1. This means the need to belong is essential for our well-being. It’s about feeling connected to others, having a sense of community, and being accepted for who we are.

Why is belonging so important?

Studies have shown that strong social connections can lead to a variety of benefits, including:

    • Improved physical health: People with strong social ties tend to live longer and have a lower risk of chronic diseases2.
    • Better mental health: Feeling connected to others can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression2.
    • Increased happiness: Strong social bonds can contribute to greater feelings of happiness and overall well-being2.

How can we foster belonging?

The good news is that there are many ways to cultivate a sense of belonging in our own lives and in the lives of others. Here are a few ideas:

    • Be kind and compassionate: Kindness is a cornerstone of You Matter Marathon, and it’s a powerful tool for fostering connection. A simple act of kindness can make someone feel seen, valued, and included.
    • Practice active listening: When we truly listen to others, we make them feel heard and understood. This can help create a sense of connection and belonging.
    • Join a club or group: Finding a group that shares your interests is a great way to meet new people and build relationships.
    • Volunteer in your community: Helping others is a rewarding way to connect with your community and feel like you’re making a difference.

By promoting kindness and fostering belonging, we can create a world where everyone feels valued, supported, and like they truly matter.  Let’s work together to create a more connected and compassionate world.

You matter.
