Why We Need to Know Our Lives Matter

In a world that often measures our worth by what we achieve, author Jennifer Wallace’s TED Talk, “Why We Need to Know Our Lives Matter,” offers a crucial reminder: doing important work isn’t enough—we must also feel seen and valued.

Drawing on her research, Wallace highlights the crisis of mattering, showing that even people in vital roles, like firefighters and caregivers, can feel unappreciated. She argues that this innate human need to matter—to know our contributions are acknowledged and make a difference—is essential for our well-being and purpose. The simple antidote? Simple acts of acknowledgment and connection.

This is the exact idea that fuels the You Matter Marathon. Our mission is to create positive connections by sharing simple message of “You Matter.” We believe that when we intentionally affirm the significance of others, we help solve the crisis of mattering and strengthen our communities. By actively seeing and acknowledging others, we fulfill a core human need for everyone, including ourselves.
